When Melbourne architecture firm Wardle was commissioned to design a new house overlooking the tranquil shores of Lake Wendouree in the regional city of Ballarat, the vision was clear: context is king. This is not just a house; it’s a living, breathing component of the Ballarat Botanical Gardens precinct.

The New Standard for Luxury Lake Wendouree Real Estate

The design team at Wardle didn’t see a blank canvas; they saw green. Situated in a suburb known for its grand houses and generous, immaculately planted gardens, the architecture pays homage to the leafy surrounds.

“A defining characteristic of the area was these beautiful, generous gardens often associated with grander houses,” says Wardle associate principal Diego Bekinschtein.

Pavilion Living: A Rich and Varied Residential Experience

Wardle conceived this two-storey luxury home Ballarat as a series of connected pavilions, each set within its own garden context, offering distinct emotive qualities, light, and materiality.

• The Front Pavilion: Built from Krause Grampian blue bricks, it features Boston ivy—a dynamic “living hedge” that showcases the seasonal nature of the property, changing from summer green to fiery autumn reds. Expansive articulated windows in the front pavilion frame panoramic views across the lake and capture the changing light throughout the day.
• The Dining Pavilion: Clad in smooth spotted-gum battens and featuring a double-height ceiling, this space feels deeply “embedded in the landscape.” It boasts a custom wood-burning fireplace and a handcrafted Tasmanian blackwood dining table, reinforcing a sense of warmth and coziness—essential for harsh Ballarat winters.
• The Kitchen & Conservatory: The home’s centre of gravity, featuring an 18-metre “floating” Carrara marble bench and a conservatory-like sitting room. Inspired by Peter Elliott’s work in the nearby Botanical Gardens, massive glass-louvred walls allow for an easy, light-filled transition between house and garden.

Weightless Design & Functional Luxury

Above the conservatory sit the children’s skylit bedrooms, forming a fourth pavilion. These cantilevered bedrooms, clad in eye-catching Pigmento red zinc, appear as weightless individual huts, drawing inspiration from the small boathouses dotting the lake.

The entire design of 227 Wendouree Parade promotes a seamless flow yet allows for “compartmentalised” living. A large timber door panel between the formal living and dining rooms offers the ability to open up for entertaining or close off for individual family space.

The rear garden completes this architectural home Ballarat with a generous lawn, ornamental pear trees, and a pool area that creates an oasis-like sanctuary, ensuring every element of this property contributes to an elevated living experience.
